Equality Bill, 27/01/10 [E/S/W]

The Fifth Committee Day in the House of Lords for the Equality Bill took place on 27 January 2010.

Issues debated include:

  • Whether faith schools should be able to require a head teacher to be a ‘reserved teacher’ (i.e. able to teach religious education, hold the appropriate belief, attend religious worship etc.), and impose religious requirements on other teachers
  • whether it is clear in the Bill that the schools’ reasonable adjustment duty is anticipatory (should apply in relation to disabled people generally, not just individual disabled persons)
  • strengthening the public sector equality duty so that it requires public bodies to take steps to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations, rather than just have regard to those goals
For full details see the House of Lords Hansard 27 January 2010 which is available from the UK Parliament website.
