During First Minister's Question Time on 4 February 2010 Michael McMahon (Lab) asked the First Minister what the Scottish Government's position is on reports that local authorities are considering cutting back education budgets in order to find savings of £270 million in 2010-11.
The First Minister, Alex Salmond, replied that councils are being provided with increasing levels of funding and an increasing share of the total Scottish budget despite the £521 million funding cut imposed by Westminster.
It is for local authorities to manage and prioritise their own budgets and the overall share that goes to schools. The figures for 2009-10 education spending by local authorities are expected to be 4.1 per cent higher than in the previous year.
