During Question Time on 4 February 2010 Stewart Maxwell (SNP) asked the Scottish Government what action it has taken to tackle the number of exclusions in schools.
The Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning, Keith Brown, replied that the Scottish Government is helping to create the learning environments needed for positive behaviour with opportunities for more engagement, motivation and enjoyment. Curriculum for excellence provides opportunities for a broad, flexible and personalised curriculum to develop skills for life, learning and work. That contributes significantly to keeping all children and young people engaged and involved in their education.
Exclusions have fallen by 24 per cent in the past two years and schools and local authorities are implementing longer-term and meaningful solutions to develop responsible citizens.
