Subordinate legislation

Information on subordinate legislation currently progressing through the Scottish Parliament and Westminster that affects children and young people, their families and those who work with or for them in Scotland.

Subordinate (or secondary) legislation, refers to laws that are made outside of an Act of Parliament.   Acts of Parliament often do not cover the full detail of each issue: they leave that to subordinate legislation.  For example, an Act of Parliament could require their to be a national curriculum in schools in Scotland, but the subjects that make up the curriculum would be set out in subordinate legislation.
